Covid-Omikron ist auf dem Vormarsch und es scheint, dass wir alle wieder in Schwierigkeiten stecken. Bedenken Sie aber bitte, dass wir uns in Tiko auf ein neues Jahr freuen, das zwar sehr hart sein wird, Tiko jedoch in Richtung Nachhaltigkeit führen wird, obwohl die Regenfälle erst jetzt – und zwar mit drei Monaten Verspätung – einsetzen! Wir müssen Ihnen dankbar sein, dass wir es mit ihrer Hilfe so weit gebracht haben, wo wir doch fast zwei Jahre aus der Lodge keine Einnahmen erzielen konnten. Auch meine Fahrten ins Ausland zur Akquirierung von Spenden hatten ja nicht stattfinden können. Doch Gott ist groß und wir hoffen, dass Sie, die Sie ein Herz für die Armen haben, ein Gefühl der Zufriedenheit empfinden – wie sehr Covid Sie jetzt auch treffen mag.

With covid omicron on the march it seems we are all in trouble again, but please note that at Tiko we are looking forward to a New Year that will be very hard, but will take Tiko towards sustainability, even though the rains are only just arriving now, three months late! We must thank you for having brought us this far, with almost two years of no income from the lodge and none of my fund-raising trips. For us, God is Great, and we hope that you, who have a heart for the poor, will have a feeling of contentment, however much covid now hits you.

Die weltweite Covid-19-Epidemie hat uns gezwungen, Veränderungen in Tiko vorzunehmen und uns unter anderem gezwungen, die Auswirkungen des Einkommensverlustes der Lodge und des Restaurants zu untersuchen. Zusammen mit Lydia, einer Viehzüchterin in Katete, und Christine, einem langjährigen, hart arbeitenden Mitglied von Tiko, fahre ich nach Uganda zu einem einwöchigen Kurs von Dr. Emma Naluyima, um zu lernen, wie wir das Land bestmöglich nutzen und die angewandten Methoden anderen demonstrieren können. Es scheint so lange her zu sein, dass ich jemanden von euch gesehen habe, aber das ist es, was COVID für uns bedeutet. Wir haben uns an das seltsam ruhige Restaurant und die Lodge gewöhnt, was mit einem Einkommensverlust verbunden ist, den sich Tiko nicht leisten kann. Wie so viele Länder bekommen auch wir die Auswirkungen der globalen Erwärmung zu spüren, wenn auch weniger dramatisch als mancherorts. In der heißen Jahreszeit hat es mehr geregnet als sonst, was sogar einigen Feldfrüchten geholfen hat, aber wenn die Temperaturen in der heißen Jahreszeit hoch waren, war die kalte Jahreszeit kälter als sonst. Wir haben bei der diesjährigen Jahreshauptversammlung auf der Veranda gezittert, während die kalte Luft ungehindert hindurchwehte…

It seems so long since I saw any of you, but that is what COVID has meant to us. We have grown used to the strangely quiet restaurant and lodge, which is coupled to a loss of income that Tiko can ill afford. Like so many countries, we are also experiencing the effects of global warming, even if less dramatically than in some places, The rains were heavier than usual in the hot season which even helped some crops, but if the temperature in the hot season was high the cold season has been colder than usual.
