Dear friends of Tikondane,
For the first time we had a lady from USA who is black. She has a fabulous job, counselling on the internet wherever she is, and her twin children are at university.
But she suffers travelling through Africa (22 countries already) when seeing tourists photographing children, shown overseas as “hungry”, “poor” or otherwise lesser than white people. I tried to tell her that many visitors hopefully get a different picture, namely that of people who are competent within their circle and, what is more, friendly, generous and happy. Now there she was really debating whether that was happiness or contentment…

These small, round garden beds (HOCHBEETE) are intended to provide members of the Tiko community with a vitamin- mineral-rich diet and a small income from selling produce. Tiko has power – in every meaning of the word and 24 hours a day. The reason? 36 solar panels have been mounted on the roof of Guernsey Great Hall, thanks to a very generous donation of the Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission, a Government of Guernsey Department, and Guernsey Aid, a charity where Peter Keeling, Tiko ́s longtime friend (see Newsletter 04/2024) is the treasurer. Three years of drought have come to an end at Tiko. In the last days of November a light rain started, none too early to put the seeds into the soil. This is a much-needed encouragement for the Tiko crew and the people in Katete. Still there are some difficult months ahead until next May ́s harvest. The drought has already morphed into a famine. It will be a challenge to prevent starvation. Statistics say that Zambia lost half of its maize harvest this year. Prices are 40 per cent higher than in 2023. According to FAO 5.6 million people in Zambia will experience a hunger crisis this winter, while a quarter of a million are even facing an emergency…
